Hearth

Children’s house, Baghere Village, Senegal // Kaira Looro Competition, 2022 // In collaboration with: Iro Stalika, Consultant Structural Engineer: Aliki Kirou

The children’s house in the Senegalese village of Baghere is a multifunctional space providing essential health care services such as medical check-ups, accommodation for mothers and children, and on-site nutrition support.

Section and plan

As you approach the building, crops are prominently displayed on the southeast façade, showcasing the importance of agriculture in the community. Two distinct entrances on the west façade, perpendicular to the main road, offer access to different building areas. The north-west entrance leads to the hospitality area and health check-up facilities, while the southwest entrance provides access to semi-open spaces and play areas.

Inspired by the value of community inherent in Senegalese culture, the architectural concept centers around a hearth - a symbol of gathering, living, and celebration.

The new children’s house is designed as an introverted center, organized around circular courtyards that foster a sense of community. Enclosed and semi-outdoor spaces blend seamlessly, reflecting the concept of boundaries as an integral part of the design.
